After:

Had to get some transmission work done, and figured I’d get this done as well. Kinda pricy, but given how much time my hand is touching this thing, it was worth it.

How’s the S4 been?

I could use the same service on my Miata. Shifter leather is all sorts of peeling and faded. Plus all the extra heat in the cabin is probably due to torn boots. I bet it would even shift better with that fixed up.

Thems is pricey shift knobs, but you’re right, it’s a part of the car you’re always touching. BTW, nice S4. I had one with the same interior. Very fun car, like a go cart.

I just did the shifter rebuild kit on the Miata. It makes a world of difference. I did a new nob and leather in the process too. Honestly, it takes about 30 minutes if you know what you’re doing. It took me an hour because I somehow popped off the plastic ring and had to fish it out of the trans. Woops.

Yup...I didn’t know that until my mom asked the dealer what it was on her A5. If you put a dime in it, it will roll out. It holds a whopping 6 quarters.

All is well - aside from this:

The S4 spoils me. I can’t think of many things it doesn’t do well...maybe aside from annoying HVAC controls and a navigation system that won’t shut up. It’s been reliable - it’s just reaching the age where wearable items need to be replaced (this was the dealer estimate and a slight misdiagnosis - I did the work at an indy shop for $1,900).

Jeeze, what needed to be done?

And I understand where you are coming from. My 335i is almost reaching that age/mileage. It’s been solid, and I love it, but I can tell I’ll start have to spending some money on preventive maintenance in the next year or so. That’s where a good Indy or DIY saves the day.

Did the same thing with the rebuild kit which was great, then finally went with the roadster short shifter kit, with fresh redline manual transmission fluid. It’s absolutely incredible. Highly recommend it if you ever have $300ish burning a hole in your pocket

Yes! Absolute ecstasy. Seems to be a bit pricier than when I bought it though...

It was hard to engage the car in first and reverse, and the dealer said I needed a new clutch...it ended up being the linkage (although it’s not perfect). That on top of front brakes, which I actually needed.

I’m clueless as to what I’d buy to replace it.

I have this strange attraction to the B8 S5. If I could find a manual one locally I’d love to get the chance to drive one. They are just really hard to find around my area though, surpisingly.

I’ll probably do that eventually. This is the first manual car that I’ve owned and it’s an NA6 that I got for $950. Still working out the other gremlins :)

Add it to the list! Definitely not a priority, more of a “useful luxury”

This is the 6 speed one which I need, so it might be differently priced than the 5 speed. Definitely adding to the project list. Just need to find a sweet shift knob to go with it. Dont want something ricey like a giant purple dildo.

I found a decent looking/feeling shift nob on ebay that has the pattern cut/painted into it. It looks like it could have come stock on a Mazdaspeed model or something along those lines. The leather boot that it came with was clearly meant for an old muscle car or something but I cut it down to fit. Good stuff is out there if you look for it.
